Jewel of the Palm Beach

Town of Lake Park is a small town on the southeast coast of Florida. To the east of the town is the Lake Worth Intracoastal Waterway and just to the west is Interstate I-95.  US Highway One, US-1 runs thru the town on the east side near the waterway.

Lake Park is approximately 2.5 square miles of a mixed use of the land. There are condominiums along the Intracoastal with single-family homes just to the east. As you head west of the railroad tracks there is light industrial with shopping centers and restaurants.

The main road that leads from the park on the Intracoastal to the downtown area, Park Avenue has mom and pop type shops and restaurants. Some of the businesses have been there for years and are favored by local residence as well as out of town visitors.

Harry Kelsey founded the Town of Lake Park in 1923. Prior to being named Lake Park, the town had several names such as Kelsey City, The Miracle City of Florida and the Gateway to the World’s Winter Playground. The town had evolved through four periods: the Kelsey Period (1920-1928), the Depression, the World War II Period, and the Present.

Harry Kelsey started to purchase land in Palm Beach County area and ended up owning approximately 100,000 acres by 1919. Mr. Kelsey chooses his favorite spot on Lake Worth to start Kelsey City.  Mr. Kelsey called the Olmsted Brothers and Dr. John Nolan to plan and design the first municipality south of Washington D.C.

The Town Hall was built in 1927, and not only survived the devastating 1928 hurricane was it sheltered the town residents during the storm. Most of the Florida East Coast was destroyed during that 1928 hurricane. The Town Hall is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places as well as several homes within the town.

Town of Lake Park became known as the Jewel of the Palm Beaches because of all they had to offer.

Located at the southeast side of town is the Town of Lake Park’s Marina. The marina has slips from 30 foot to 60 foot for rent. There are no fix bridges or drawbridges from the marina to the Palm Beach Inlet, which is less than a mile from the harbor. The marina has fuel, a ship store, showers, a boat ramp, pump out station, etc. for both boaters that rent slips as well as boaters that are out and need to fill up prior to heading out into the ocean.

Many boaters stop by the marina prior to making the trip to the Bahamas because of the location and the ease of getting in and out of the marina prior to starting their trip into the ocean. Check out the town’s web site at www.lakeparkmarina.com.

Lake Park has many fine restaurants within their limits that offer many types of foods to choose from. There is Southern Kitchen on US-1, Pelican Café also located on US-1 (www.thepelicancafe.com), Camilli’s Pizza on Park Avenue (www.camillispizza.com), Mrs. Smokey’s Bar-BQ (www.mrssmokeys.com) located on 10th Street. There are many others also located with in the town with several new restaurants that are planning to open in the near future.

Lake Park has several parks for the kids to play as well as parks that you may rent for your private functions. Kelsey Park along with Lake Shore Park is prime locations to hold wedding or family reunions. The parks are located on the Intracoastal Waterway with a fantastic view, which makes a great backdrop for your photos.

Lake Park has tennis courts, which are located at the north end or Lake Shore Park. Also the is a tennis pro with an office who offers tennis lesions to anyone along with free lesions to the kids. During the week, there are free dancing lesions that are held at the pavilion in Lake Shore Park for any one who wishes to learn to dance. There is line dancing as well as other types of dancing in the park.

Lake Park has a ball field for playing baseball, football, or soccer. Many local schools rent the field for their school’s use. The field has a lighting system so it can be enjoyed both day and night. The town offers summer camp as well as other activities for the kids.

Lake Park also has their own library to visit located next to Town Hall. Many local residents as well as visitors from outside of town enjoy visiting the town’s library because of the friendly staff as well as the events that they offer like story time, movie night, and more. Lake Park has several large shopping centers to visit like Wal-Mart, Kohl’s, K-Mart, Target, Lowes, and Publix along with many other fine stores with a wide range to offer. There are two large car dealerships with in the town. Mullinax Ford (www.mullinaxford.com) and Earl Stewart Toyota (www.earlstewarttoyota.com) along with several smaller used car lots.

Lake Park, Florida is the home for the future Army Reserve Center that is currently under design built. The current plans are to build the training center, which will have approximately 6oo personnel visiting each month for their monthly training.

Lake Park is a wonderful place to live because you do not have to wonder very far to eat out, visit the store, dry cleaners and much more. If you really wanted to, you could get away without having a car and using a bike or just walking to the location.
